Student Loans

Some of the best doctors in the city managed to get to university and medical school only because of the facility of student loans. If you check the backgrounds of many of these renowned doctors and specialists you will find that they come from very modest and even very poor homes that could never have afforded to let them go and study. Today they are the people driving around the city streets in their Jaguars and BMW’s and it’s all due to student loans. They would never have got there without them. They must have enjoyed repaying their student loans.

I took a student loan in order to get to university. My old man had laughed when I asked if he could pay the fees. I caught a bus to the financial district of the town. I walked into the first bank I came to and asked the way to the student loan department. I filled out the forms, lied my way through the interview and left clutching my student loan in my sweaty hand. After that it was plain sailing. All that’s left now is to repay the loan as soon as possible and be done with it.

It worked for me. I took my first student loan at the end of my second year at the university. That’s when they retired my old man from his company and the household suddenly switched its budget to “austere mode”. The student loan was highly successful and I renewed it each year until I was qualified, which was quite some years later. Now it all seems like a joke; the amounts I borrowed on my student loan seem paltry and hardly worth worrying about, but back in those days it was real money and not to be sneezed at.
